Newbie @1000 metres

Gidday fellas, I'm thinking of having a crack at the 1000 metre shoot in Sept at Canberra. I just ran some figures over Load from a Disc and it's telling me for a 1100 yd zero I need about 34 MOA total. I'm running a 12- 42 Nightforce --- this has 40 MOA --- so I'm guessing 20 MOA up and 20 MOA down. Now,----- for all those experienced 1000m shooters out there--- will an additional 20 MOA rail suffice to still be able to zero a scope at 1000 metres ?

You should get to 1000yds with a 20MOA rail/rings with the 12-42. If you are not I would suggest a 30-30 isnt the right choice for a 1000yd BR rifle.

I think my Dasher only needs 26MOA....

Thanks AI--- won't know untill I try--- LFAD is telling me I require 38 inches high @100 and 72 inches high @200, so untill I get the rifle out to Silverdale for a trial, I'm still guessin'

20 MOA rail gets me there with a 6br and a 284win.So that'll be cool.
If you want to centre the scope go 30/40moa but that will makke it near impossible to use under 300 yards.

You only need to be looking at whether you can get to 1000yds, not meters.

The range is 900m/1000yds a here at Canberra.

What is the calibre that you'll be using? My 6.5x55 Ackley varies between 24 and 27 minutes up from 100m.

Malcolm do you know where your 100 yard/meter zero is on the elevation turret? if so start at this and wind it in the up direction and count the clicks, markings to know exactly how much you have left after zeroing at 100. IF you have more than the required amount then you should be fine, what cal is it? I'm coming down and bring the 308 which will need around 34-36 from memory. When I first installed everthing with maxima rings I only had enough for 24 so I have installed some Burris signature Zee's with the inserts so hopefully this will be enough as I haven't zero'd it yet.

This 1000 yard shooting sounds interesting unfortunately I am still waiting on a Mark IV base for the Mod 70 so will probably only shoot the Fly on Saturday.

Unless of course I run the 6mm 284 in the 1000 yard and the 338WM in the Fly.

Damn.... that would mean that I need batch projectiles for the .338WM and acquire another kilo of powder.

Hi all , Don't put off trying 1000yd benchrest.. We put off doing it for nearly a year back in the late 90s.. The thought was if ya didn't have a handle on 500met Fly ,no use going any further.. Wrong ,the 1000yd benchest event is and always will be easier than the FLY ..Give it a go ,i love that distance ,i'ts a hoot..JR..Jeff Rogers..My 30 cal come ups are a little flatter than some guns at 100yds to 500met = 6 1/4 min ,100yds to 1000yds is 19 minutes on a fresh barrel..
