T'ville 600 IBS Match.

Hi all. Sunday was our first go at this 600 yard thing and all i can say is that it was like sitting in a sauna and trying to work out why teenagers are so brain dead at times. So it was hot and for the better part, a lost cause for some of us. The mirage was not too ugly and the wind would occasionally gust up, but it would return back to an even flow of about 5 to 10 knots long enough to get a few shots off and then the cycle would repeat again. Really, on a Fly day, this was a possible 250 plus score day, but there was nothing stunning shot group or score wise.
Eight of us dickheads rolled up, one HG, six LG and one Factory Gun. Needless to say, Alan Neilson with his Tikka T3 223 rabbit gun took out the FG with a 150 score and an 11 inch group agg for the 4 cards.
In HG, JR had a spiking problem (not June with the whisky) with pressure slowing the drop port to a crawl and shots on paper went vertical for all but one group which went 1.10 inch. Unfortunately the group and score were DQed because one of the shots fired was during the sighter period. All in all it was a crap day for JR with no worthwhile group or score to carry over for the six and ten match results.
In LG, the 6 BRs that showed up well in the practice match earlier this year, were under the pump with the 284s of both Eric Gustavson and Bob Noakes spinning their 168 SMKs into nice flat groups. The two 6 BRs of mine and Chris Joscht's were doing the vertical heebiejeebies like JRs was, but i was able to take out the group agg with a 3.519 with Eric G second on 3.524 and John McQuire with a 4.253. Small group was my own at 2.572. In the LG score, Bob Noakes took it out with a very good 193 with myself second on 192 and Eric on 189. High score card for the day was John McQuire's 52.
Like always, we had fun even though most of us shot way below our expectations. Eric G had the biggest smile on his face as the 284, now well over the 2000 round mark, has returned to former glory with the reinstatement of the 168 SMK into the load. So a big thanks from him to Peter VanChequebook down in Vic for getting those bullets up in quicktime.
Our next 600 match is on the 25/3/07. Thanks to all who participated and we shall see you all soon.

Thanks for the report .. sure you guys were'nt at Majura ..

Sounds like lots of interest in the 600 up their, doesn't seem to be much interest in the south .. well not so far anyway.

As for the results .. mate even a bad day shooting beats a good day working.

Evening all,
after a conversation with JR I worked out part of my problems; while i had reclaimed the primer pockets with JR's swage i did not check the case lengths as i thought they were ok from last year.

In the photo above i am checking the expansion at the belt (after one fireing) and seeing it at 1.5 thou was not a good thing as it ment the brass was realing moving.

After mentioning to JR i also had trouble chambering the rounds Jr said that if the cases were to long and the end of neck was hard against the chamber i could be experiancing presure spikes and this would explain the extraction problems i had and possibly the large amount of movement in the bases.

This just goes to show that you need to check everything all the time especially when running at the top end of the presure ranges, i'm probably very lucky this over sight didn't result in something worse than screwing up a good day at the range that should have resulted in 3 inch groups or better

Hi all, Been a bit crook ,back on deck now,thanks to TZ for the report..to elaborate a little further ..Because we have no precident in rules in the 1st AUS 600 yd bench match we included a Factory class like some of the ranges have a 1K in the US ,this will be run at all of the matchs in '07,all other rules are copy of the IBS set up.. WE only had 1 factory gun ,he won and had a ball ..Alpal didn't shoot as tight as at the practice but to get 150 score out of 220 possibile is awesome i reckon from a 223 with 55 gn skippy wackin bullets ,great work Alan.. A good mix of cartridges in Light gun and i think some great groups considering the conditions .. Heavy gun , well there was only one and he should have stayed home ,you ever had one of those days when you know u it's goin to be crap from the get go ..I placed a sighter on the record target and ruined a great group for a DNQ ,doesnt matter ..JR..Jeff Rogers ..ps..included is a pic of the disqualified target,the 4 shot one holer with the lines through goes .535 ,a bit over an inch for the 5 .. And the one with the circle around is the F...up and by the way we shot 2 groups on the same target one after the other to save on the expensive US targets

I just wanted to post these two targets so some of you can see a direct comparison to the Fly target you are familiar with. You will also see the vertical heebiejeebies i had to deal with for the day. The first group is marked with the vertical lines through the holes and measured 2.572" with the second group considerably bigger. My biggest of the day in fact. Really shits me when you get the wind right and the gun goes to the heavens for forgivness.

Hi all , Just seen the results from the 1st 600 IBS match in the US so far ,held at Bridgeville.. They have included a Factory class as well , talking to 2 guys today looks like we will have a Whitworth Mauser in 7mm RM and a Styer ssg in 308w at the next match at 600 yds , so the decision is the right one..JR..Jeff Rogers
