Stock Design and Features

Post by albow »

Last year when I built the stock for LR my rifle I had the luxury of building it exactly how I wanted it and with features that I thought were required or necessary however having used the stock now for nearly 12 months I would change a couple of things about it. Other people when they buy stocks do so due to features that they like in the design.

If you were to design your own stock for LR benchrest or F Class what features would it have and why?

G'day Albow, I made or should I say modified a standard stock on a 22 once and was very happy how it came out. During the process I continually shouldered and benched the thing and made little changes along the way. I was very happy with the finished stock and it fitted me like a glove.
Can you show us a pic of your stock? here's mine.

I like the look of both those stocks,Knackers.
The top one is an unusual pattern and the bottom wood is cool.
Albow, as to features,I have a big palm but short fingers so I like the large pistol grip or palm swell. I am considering a thumbhole next time.
I need to have a cheek rest for the height of my nightforce scope.
If I'm sharing time with my son,who is taller,we need adjustable buttstocks.
The rest is just design for bag ride etc.

Hi Knackers, for some pictures of my stock go to this thread.

Macca I find the thumbhole nice to use and have built in a cheek piece that I find good too.

One stock I would like to see in person/have a hold of, is the 6.5-284 Savage F class rifle. Looks perfect for F class

Four factors to look for IMHO:
1. trackability on the bags,
2. fit to body/face/hands of shooter,
3. low C of G.
4. suitability of design to intended purpose.
