26-11-06 Canberra 1000 yd BR report
Dave Purcell - sorry for the delay in responding.
6 shooters turned up to shoot 1000yds on Sunday.
Hans Hoitink, Clem Payne, Dave Groves, Jim Clifford, Scott Newport and myself.
The low numbers were quite surprising; maybe, the predicted hot weather and confusion on the dates were factors!
The conditions were typical for Canberra lately, not bad, not good, just challenging twisting and pulsing left to right with a range from approximately 3-15 knots.
Approximate results are as follows. The exact details will be on the website in time.
Heavy Gun ( 4 shooters)
Total Score - Dave Groves 178 Scott Newport 171 Hans Hoitink 166
Average Group – Dave Groves 17.75” Hans Hoitink 18.6” Scott Newport 18.7”
Smallest group Dave Groves approx 8.5ish”
Light Gun ( 5 shooters )
Total Score - Hans Hoitink 95.1 Jim Clifford 90.1 Dave Groves 88.1
Average Group- Jim Clifford 9.766” Hans Hoitink 10.398” dg 10.495”
Largest and Smallest groups - dg 15.7ish” & 5.304”
Due to the small numbers we were finished, fed and packed to leave by approx 1.30pm.
All had a very social and enjoyable day.
Additionally,it maybe of interest to some that, given the small numbers attending, there was plenty of time to socialise and chat. As a result of this, Dave Groves has indicated that all future results will show the mode of shooting style adopted by competitors on the day.
Dave to his credit, has actually introduced these changes in the results he has posted out. Thanks Dave!!!
There was also consensus that 1000yd BR in Australia needed consistency and simplicity in the manner in which 1000yd BR events were organised.
Ie. It should not be a problem if shooters elect to shoot blind or marked target and the rules/rifle specifications for either IBS or marked target should be clarified and consistently interpreted and administered across Australia.
Note
this report was prepared earlier in the week, but due to the gremlins in accessing the ausvarmint site it has only been possible to post today.
Because of this, some of this information maybe already known by many, but to some it may not.
Also it was prepared under the assumption that the actbenchrest site was dead in the water, but apparently to has come back to life with the latest Canberra and Brisbane results shown.
Unfortunately the mode of shooting style are not listed or differentiated.
By the numbers and scores, most in Brisbane would be happy with the participation and results achieved.
Are any Brisbane shooters available to comment on the conditions and happenings for the day?
cheers

dg,
Sounds like a good day was had by all, the numbers are pretty low but that may change.
5.304 very nice mate you just need 2 of them in the one day.
I will see you at the Fed Cup on 10 March. if that lazy gunsmith that lurks around here gets my 30.06 AI sorted I will shoot LG at the 1000 on the 11 March.
Cheers

belated report on 1000yd br
dave
will look forward to march
what brand of brass do you intend to use in the 30-06 ackley?
i have been using w-w and lapua in the 7mm ackley and have been allowing for approx. 25-30 thou for shrinkage, depending on the method used to fire form the brass.
how are those solar powered flags progressing?????
cheers mate

dg,
I will be doing the Lapua brass for the 30.06. I have found it to be very consistant and thats all I ask for.
I am slowly working them out, I have the stainless tube and fibreglass rods, the ball tops are easy...still working on the arrow .. what size was it ?? again.
The more I lookat things and think about it, the more I think it will end up a 6.5-06AI fairly quickly.
But thats the fun of it isnt it.
cheers

Rinso,
Don't go overloading the 30.06 ackley unless you have a F/l die. Lapua brass should holds more powder then Federal but haven't tried Winchester yet. I will change mine to something I can buy Redding dies for next time otherwise its too expensive. I emailed Redding and they told me they have never made an S type F/L die for the 30.06 ackley and it would cost over $200 to make one.
The 30.284 would be better in the longe run. Ballistics are near identical to the 30.06 ackley. I tried my 30.06 ackley as a light gun but didn't like the punishment.

steven,
I am getting in line dies so no issues there.
The recoil is what it is and yes its no 6mmBR when its hitting your shoulder.
I think the 30.284 is sound but I have wanted a 6.5-06 for a long time and I will get it when the30 cal barrell is gone which wont be to long.
I think the 6.5 -06 has something to offer at 1000 in particular and yes its won in the USA at 1000.
Time will tell
cheers

belated report on canberra 1000yds br
Dave et al
In relation to wind flags, even if it were possible to construct a system that was-
· simple in design
· inexpensive and made from easily obtainable materials
· linear in operation and able to reliably indicate wind speeds up to 25knots
· extremely low in inertia and able to react instantaneously to variations in wind speed or direction.
· have no moving friction generating parts in its design
· be visible and readable by the naked eye up to 1000yards
· simple and quick to erect and take down
· have an indefinite service life
· capable of being produced in a range of sizes, that are analogous in sensitivity and deflection.
· not made in china
I would still need some type of inbuilt
QUICK SHOOT NOW
or
DON’T SHOOT (too late, seeee!!!! I told you not to shoot)
device within the system somewhere.
Could an automatically activated spring loaded hammer attached to the rear of the scope be of assistance to the above in minimising or eradicating misplaced shots?
Hmmmm, having given this a bit of thought and in consideration of my flyshoot efforts for quite a while, and also being somewhat allergic to pain, would it be legal to wear a helmet to the benchline??
would the hammer take the light gun over 17lbs?
do they make helmets with in built earmuffs?
what colours do they come in?
who sells them and at what price?
how many weeks to the march shoot?
have I got the time?
again, too many questions, not enough answers.
By the way, the mirror installed on the muzzle, highlights the main cause of all my shooting problems.
Dave, will try and ring during the week.
cheers
