Rimfire Buttstock Width

Post by Rabbitz »

Due to ongoing neck and shoulder issues it looks like it will be a while before I can don a jacket and shoot smallbore off my elbows again.

Thus I need to think about temporarily 'adapting' the Anschutz to shoot off bags.

It started life as a 1981 model 1813, but now lives in an aluminium Anschutz Precise stock. One of these:

As you can see there isn't much, of anything, around the buttstock to sit on the rear bag. Which means I need to bodge up errr adapt something.

I thought about reversing the butt-hook but I suspect that would be too narrow, if it can be done.

The next, and current, idea is to use the butt-hook as a mount for some PVC pipe which will then become the 'bag rider'.

This begs the question: "How wide should this bag-rider' adaptor be?". I guess it will vary from rifle to rifle and rear bag type to rear bag type. I happen to have some 20 mm, 25 mm and 50 mm kicking around in the shed.

Before I try and emulate the tradesmen at RAF Productions does anyone have a guess whether any of these will be a) good enough; or b) legal?

Also if you have already solved this conundrum, some piccies would be appreciated.

After fluffing around for a couple of hours, I have hit upon a solution.

Why not just put it back in it's wooden stock?

Done.

Aaaaaww! What fun is that?

I was quite looking forward to see how you went with the PVC pipe slider train of thought.

You will never get a job with RAF Engineering at Hillston if you keep going all "Captain Sensible" on us .......

You are right, of course.

So I guess it's back to the shed.

Despite having few tools, no training, little ability and no idea.

What could go wrong?

The initial idea was to adjust the many many settings on the Precise Stock butt assembly to get the bottom of the vertical shaft clear of the bottom of the butt plate. This allowed me to straighten and re-install the butt hook. The hook was installed pointing towards the muzzle.

Some PVC pipe was cut, drilled with the idea that it goes over the hook and gets cable tied into position:

It was found that the pipe moved around a little. As the hook is tapered a piece of wood was split with an axe and then tapped gently into place to wedge the hook against the inside of the pipe and to further tension the cable ties.

To paraphrase John Lennon "I hope I've passed the audition.".

Yes, I know it is a weak excuse.
