ND April 2017 IBS 600yd BR Match Report

Post by dg »

The Narromine Dubbo Rifle Club held the 1st 600yd BR Match today on the new 40% Official IBS Targets.

Although the weather forecast and Easter activities kept numbers lower than anticipated, all who attended, apparently enjoyed themselves and more importantly enjoyed the challenges associated with IBS 600 Yard BR.

Both, today during the match and yesterday (when some attempted to attach scopes and make preliminary sighting adjustments) the existing running and bubbling mirage ensured that the identification of the scoring rings and bullet holes was impossible.

Scopes ranging from 10-60 power and regardless of whether they were March, Nightforce, Sightron or Weaver etc could not resolve 600yard bullet holes.

Organisation wise and time wise we found that running the 600yd matches was significantly easier than 1000yd BR.

Thanks again Townsville/Cairns members for your assistance and ideas.

All going to plan, for the next match in seven weeks, we intend to have specialist 600yd target frames made which will allow the sighter and record targets to be independently slid in/out quickly and easily.

Those who shot today purchased their own targets and have the option of re-using them at future matches or purchasing and using fresh new ones.

It seems that the Hornady 105 HPBT, 2209 and either RWS or 2 anvil Rem 7 ½ primers are still punching above the weight.

PS.- having shot a few 500m fly matches over the years (but none at ND) all I can say is that 600yd BR is definitely different to Fly Shooting

Hi Dave glad it went well.
That 6brimp holds bloody good elevation. Haven't had a chance to spin the 105's yet. Will keep you posted .

hi grant

yep, you are not wrong, only have to place a mirror on the muzzle to see where the main problem is located.

ES wise, not sure how long it will last but so far, most of the time the numbers are closer to 5 than 10, but this is relative to the actual accuracy of the chronograph and whether the numbers really mean anything.

up until today I have been using 10 year old 2209, but last week, just for interest I bought a bottle of the newest batch I could find in Dubbo, used it today and it seems to also do the job.

I have now totally given up on all Bergers in this barrel, but we have a 1000yd BR in 4 weeks in which I intend to give sierra's a work out.

Well done Dave,

There will be cats dying all over Brisbane this long weekend. Good to see you guys had fun shooting it, it's different to 1000yd, in terms of the degree of difficulty, but also the tantalizing encouragement, followed by the thump of you coming back to earth when you see the target. It's only 600yds right? Can't be that hard? Wanna bet? Levels up the playing field for those shooting 308, and gives a good, direct comparison between LG and HG, since both only shoot 5 shots per target.

We shoot weekend after next, looks like we might see a few names absent for many years back in it again.

hi jeff

you summed up the 600 very well.

it is certainly unique in many ways.

apart from making appropriate allowances to encourage new shooters and or juniors, I love the fact, that for seasoned shooters, no spotters or coaching is allowed.

not being able to use any sighters during the record target, as per 1000yd BR rules, definitely increases the attention and concentration levels in terms of analysing conditions and in deciding when to shoot or not to shoot !!!!!

prior to the match (assuming that some scopes may possibly resolve bullet holes) we had given thought and discussion on how to deal with the eventuality that on their 2nd record target that shooters might see and be confused with the holes from their 1st target group.

WELL, given the prevailing conditions, this was a total waste of time and our limited "brain power".

as it was, in the morning, we were lucky to see and just try and make out the dancing "blue" when aiming.

however after the BBQ and when cleaning and packing up during the early afternoon, with the sun behind and in still and much cooler conditions, the visibility was such that any brand of scope could read tomorrow's headlines without difficulty.

as you mentioned the differential disadvantage for those using 308's is much less.

it will be interesting to see how this event evolves across Australian NRAA ranges.

we had visitors from other Central NSW clubs shooting TR and F Class on Saturday and although they did not shoot on sunday they were all most interested in the concept of the 600yd BR.

Hi Dave,
Congrats on your first shoot.
Looking at the results before the posts I reckoned that the conditions must have been a bit "hows ya father". As Jeff said it will be interesting to see how the two classes compare under the same number of shots. The 6.5 x 47 reamer should be here in the next day or so, have every thing else except barrel which should be here at the end of the month.
Cheers,
Trevor.

Good to see you all having fun down there at ND.

Dave i have no doubt the year will see the dual of the pickers and runners. Either way your range is never easy.
