Many Benchrest shooters (mainly in Short range 6PPC) load at the range for each detail as this allows them to vary/tune their load for the conditions.
That said Shooters have won at the US Super Shoot and pretty much everywhere else with pre loaded ammo so its not an absolute ... it really a what works for you thing IMHO.
IMHO most BR shooters are effected far more by poor wind reading, bad technique (even if only on a given day) and other things like lack of application and concentration they they ever will loose to using pre loaded ammo.

I have never loaded at the range, but I'd imagine load testing would be one reason. You might use 5 shot groups of different powder loads, which you could load at home. Then once you decide which powder load is best, you could load some more of that load at the range and try different seating depths on the same day.
Also, some shooters may have only a small amount of really good brass, and want to use it multiple times on the same day.

also saves on brass prep as you only need 15 or 20 cases- but as you are a nut for case prep- 300 17 FB neck turned twice- it wont bother you

I have a harrel's br premium 60 thrower and can't think of to much that I would swap it for,a test over 100 throws with 2208 the most that it varied was .4 of a grain,that was for 11 throws.
for ease of setup and loading at the range they are great,for short range br a slight variation does not seem to make a difference on the target,quality gear.
Trevort if you can get to a br match and have a look around i'm betting you will see a few in use.

like Kenny said, you better save some pennies for at least 6 BRT Elliot wind flags, everyone like using them and if you go to a big match you most likely see them or a clone. You've got to know how to read and understand them to learn BR shooting quickly and not burn up barrels and bullets.
As for loading at the range with your ppc, once you do it you can never understand why you never done it before. I prime all my cases at home, and throw powder straight from the Harrel (and the BR-30) into the case load and go test at the range. I can quickly load 5-10 rounds, shoot, come back change either powder weight or seating depth and check again. Its great to know I then do not have to pull loads when I got home, just load them up with the load I reckoned worked the best.
If you get into BR you will need no more than 15-20 cases, I like to have 2 lots of 20 for the occasion that I have cases fail, I've got a fresh set. Dont laugh, it has happened! I've still got them as a reminder of why you need to carefully set the shoulder bump to 1-2 thou, not 10 thou!
We probably need to meet so I can show you what you need to shoot a match before you credit card melts down like chernobyl.

Ned, its gone all wobbly already, close to melting point!
Ive ordered the rifles (long and short range) ordered the dies (long range) ordered the sinclair windage top br rest, got the protector deluxe rear bag, 100 lapua 220 russian cases, the sinclair neck turning kit (though the adjustment feature seems a waste of $50 US, anyone want to buy it) so I can practice on the 17fb before hacking up ppc cases
and lots of other bits. wind flags, havent needed yet as there were lots of other peoples on the ranges in my limited comp experience. Do want my own so I can set them up at LR and practice, there could be so much more to buy

yeah this is the thing, without flags to practice over (any flag is better than nothing!) your wasting barrel life and bullets without learning as much as you could if you had competition grade flags
Its kinda like flying a plane without really understanding what all the intruments mean....................you may be able to start the engine, take off, but that's when the frustration begins, how do you drive the sucker properly!
We spend a lot of time on deciding which barrel, scope, calibre bullet etc, but without thae all important knowledge on wind reading by a good set of flags, its kind of pointless.
If you need some flags I can make you a set of basic flags to get you started. I can email you some photos if you like.
