Re: Long Range B/R

Pete you're right about the "age hardening", I have experienced about a 5% split neck ratio in some norma .243 rounds I loaded about 30yr's ago with a mild dose of IMR4895. No other signs of problems (eg blown primer pockets or cratered primers etc) and the rounds are still reasonably accu...

Re: Problem with front rest

Rick, try 50gn sierra b/k or nosler b/t or vmax's and 26.5gn 2208 (work up in .5gn increments from 24.5gn) all shoot well under the 1moa in my howa s/s sporter (5 shots) with the b/k's best group at .290 at a hundred. B/t's are a shade better than the vmax's in my rifle also. Regards Alpal Ps my how...

Re: sako 85 & cartridges for NZ deer, sambar, red deer?

Not much you can't take with the old .308, good ballistics, accuracy, low recoil, cheap accurate ammo available everywhere.
Cos it ain't new doesn't mean it aint good.

Re: re tightening action screws

As con said, don't do em up too tight if they are not supported. As a rule of thumb, if I don't have a torque wrench available I tighten them both up (front and back on my winnies and howa) as tight as I can without going overboard with my LEFT hand (I'm right handed) and then tighten the front scre...

Re: Resurecting an old workhorse

Dr G, just A quick note, one of my 670's is an A670, the other is a straight 670, both have the three (3) position safety, both have pressed checkering and neither has a jewelled bolt. Looks like yours has the cut checkering, could come up nice.

Re: Favourite load for 87gn V Max in .243

I found 43.5 gn of 4895 (2206h?) very good with 85gn sierra hpbt gamekings in my .243 win.

Re: Need thoughts before 0700 tomorrow.

Sub moa weatherby's are pretty good, smooth action and tight tolerances with a good trigger and guaranteed sub moa from the box, imagine what a little tinkering with the bedding etc might produce!!
Great looking stock too.
Cheers Alpal.

Re: VORTEX

Thomo, the sightron scope is very hard to beat, especially in low light conditions, if you get the chance to compare to a similar priced loupie side by side you may get a pleasant surprise. Don't write it off.

Re: Base and 30mm rings, opinions????

I have a couple of sets of millet rings on two of my rifles and they seem very good for cheapies, dual allen keys on each side of tube and weaver style.

Ditto rinso and co. for me. Read all if it's there but wouldn't go looking for specific sports I'm not into.

Excellent article AI, glad to see the old .308 is still very competative, still hard to beat and cheap to shoot.
Thanks again

I have been firing some 25-30yo reloads, (.243 norma brass, 4895 powder, 85gn sierras) still plenty accurate and with only a couple with hairline splits at the neck. 1-1.5" 5 shot groups from my win670 with a sporter barrel, a few less than 3/4". The ammo was loaded with a lee loader (neck...
