Re: cheap 2-7 rifle scope
I bought one just before Christmas for $49... Loaned it to a friend to try with a night vision setup attached and he wants to keep both now. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Best-Quality-2-7x32-Tri-Rail-Red-and-Green-Mil-Dot-Rifle-Scope/613869754.html It looked cheap and nasty when I tried it, but so ...

Re: spotting scopes ?
What about a small transmitting camera that is affixed close to the target so you can watch your impacts on a small screen? 500m is a long way, but there are some that will make it OK. and you can fix a shielded loupe over a small screen for daylight use. I bought such a sample unit while I was at S...

Re: Night vision scopes
Gen1 isn't much use, but you can make your own cascade-tube spotter for around $200 to $300 which work very well, with or without extra IR. Regards David gee, thanks  :( Now I feel bad. Let me requote that. Gen1 works OK at shorter ranges with lots of extra IR :) But I am not really a fan of G...

Re: Night vision scopes
The restrictions on NV already apply to Gen2 and Gen3, but it's only for export. The problem with buying one overseas is that it is difficult to find someone who will sell you a better model as most countries have their own restrictions. Better models do come up from time to time, but are rare. I ha...

Re: Thermal spotting rabbit at 80m... Through grass.
I hadn't thought about the duck's natural thermal insulation. Good point. Actually, water makes things difficult because it holds a lot of thermal mass, but it doesn't emit much IR - however it does reflect it really well. So near the bank, it's very bright. As a result, I needed to get some height ...

Re: Thermal spotting rabbit at 80m... Through grass.
is this with your home made camera dave? Dr G Yes it is... The rabbit isn't that easy to notice from the video, but if you look at the gap between the trees, you can see a small glow. To me, it was easy to spot, but even with the extra IR and Gen3 night vision, we couldn't see it at first... So I k...

Thermal spotting rabbit at 80m... Through grass.
I know the question is asked once in a while - how do you spot a rabbit in a field of grass...
Here's a short video of a rabbit being spotted on Thermal - distance approx 80m.

Re: rifle mounted torch
Fenring. Yes, you're right about the searching problem. Searching the field through the 2 degree beam is a little like searching the field through the riflescope, though I can actually remove the collimator and get a 6 degree beam or wind it out to about 40 degrees for just wandering about. But the ...

Re: rifle mounted torch
Just on this matter - I've noticed that most torches try for "Lumens" and "Eye Visible" at 1x zoom - I haven't yet seen a torch that is truly optimised for night shooting with a high zoom riflescope. A 6x riflescope has a typical optical field of view of around 3 degrees. And an ...

I currently use a PS 22 CGTi with a good IR illuminator. It sounds like you got a good one :) The PS22 has a less-than-great reputation internationally for POI-shift and consistency but a guy in Europe has been working out how to get them back on target and adjust the boresight alignment to improve...

I am hoping to give it a field test in a few weeks :) In the mean time, here's something I know you'll all appreciate - Cat at 40m. I didn't even see this one with my eyes until he was halfway across the road and under the streetlight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgxrmIB1ppQ http://www.youtube.co...

THAT IS FRIKKEN AWESOME CJ! Great stuff mate! is it legal in Aus? Yes, it's all legal in Australia... Getting things is hard because of complicated US based export laws but when you can get them, it is perfectly legal. Though of course some other rules apply where deer are concerned. But it does ma...

Latest project - Thermal NV.
Hi all, I've been a bit snowed under with work lately, but thought I'd introduce the start of the latest project. Low-cost thermal gear. Basically modified thermal cores intended for vehicle navigation and threat detection, but at around $3K all up, it's way under the $15K prices we've been seeing l...
